Cotto Manetti has reintroduced the ancient craftsmanship of Impruneta terracottas dating from the Middle Ages, that were highly developed from the 15th century. For this production it uses the same coiling and casting techniques with original moulds from the family kiln’s historical plaster cast gallery. Large jars, vases and basins, amphorae, statues and traditional furniture accessories – from interpretations of the Italian garden – are all rigorously handmade and chisel-decorated.

The large amphorae used for winemaking are handcrafted without moulds, using the entirely manual, coiling method. The modeller, with drawings to indicate heights and widths, shapes the piece, with the slowness inherent to the features of its raw material. The presence of galestro (calcar clay schist) in the clay makes the terracotta highly resistant to cold, whilst its salts and calcium carbonates give the large jars and amphorae the permeability and porosity required for winemaking.
